Have you ever pondered the lives of your ancestors? In my own exploration of genealogy, I’ve found that while names and dates can be recorded, the essence of who these people were remains elusive. What were their experiences? How did they feel? What was their daily life like? These questions inspired a painting I created as a tribute to the remarkable women who came before me.
I am here today because of the perseverance and sacrifices of countless women throughout history. My ancestors arrived in what is now West Virginia before the Revolutionary War, escaping famines and religious persecution to forge a new life. Their determination laid the foundation for my independent life and the opportunities I enjoy today.
This painting is dedicated to the women of my past:
- Grandma Garrett, who sewed, sang, and played piano in the church, bringing joy and comfort to her community.
- Grandma Marks, who spent decades teaching in one-room schoolhouses, nurturing a love of learning and hope in young minds.
- Great-Grandmother Maggie, who tragically passed away from a simple tooth infection at the age of 42, leaving Grandma Garrett to navigate life as a motherless teenager.
- My Mother, an unexpected trailblazer who balanced the demands of nursing with raising four young children, inspiring me to be self-reliant and strong.
Through this painting, I honor their lives and the profound impact they’ve had on shaping my own. Their stories of resilience, dedication, and love remind me of the strength and spirit that have been passed down through generations.
